BROAD
WINSOR a parish and liberty 3 miles N.W. from Beaminster, and 11 N.E. from Lyme
Regis, in the union of Beaminster. The
living is a vicarage, value £750, with 7 acres of glebe land and residence.
The Rev. Solomon Caesar MALAN, M.A., is the incumbent.
The church is dedicated to St. John the Baptist.
There is a large National School, also a chapel for Independents.
There are charities of the annual value of £35.
A large trade is carried on here in sailcloth. The population in 1861 was
1,538; the acreage, 6,214. Lewesdown
and Pillesdon hills are conspicuous seamarks, both in this parish, the former
being 940 feet above the level of the sea, and the latter 920.
CHILDHAY
is a tithing, 2 1/2 miles N.W.; Little Winsor, a tithing, 1 1/2 mile N.;
Drimpton, a tithing, and Dibberford, a tithing 2 miles N.E., with brickfields.
BLACKDOWN
is 2 1/2 miles W. There is an
unendowed chapel of ease, with a National School attached.
