Chardstock |
St
Andrews Church, Chardstock |
Chardstock is one of the most
westerly parishes in the traditional county of Dorset. Parishes in Devon are to the
north and south of it, the parish of Wambrook lies to the west and
Thorncombe and Hawkchurch to the east. The church of St Andrew was
rebuilt in 1864 and the College of St Andrew adjoins it. The
parish registers date from the year 1590 and are considered to be in an
excellent state of preservation. Chardstock was transferred from Dorset to the county of Devon in 1896, but remains in the Diocese of
Salisbury. Chardstock All Saints (in Smallridge) is a modern ecclesiastical parish, the church was erected in 1845 with registers starting from that date. It was created from Chardstock and Axminster. Wambrook was a chapelry of this parish. The parish covers 5618 acres and the chief crops are wheat barley, oats and apples. The population of All Saints parish was 533 in 1871. |
