Church of St Paul, Hammoon

Hammoon is a parish and small village on the River Stour to the east of Sturminster Newton. It is surrounded by the parishes of Okeford Fitzpaine and Shillingstone to the south and west, Child Okeford to the east and Manston to the north. The church of St Paul is a small ancient building comprising a nave, chancel, porch and bell turret. The church was restored in 1896 at a cost of £900. The Manor House is an attractive 16th century building of grey stone with a thatched roof. It was formerly the seat of the Moyon family

The church registers date from 1656. The parish covers an area of only 677 acres, the soil is clay, sand and gravel and the chief crops both in the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century were wheat, barley, oats, beans and grass. The population in 1851 was 73 persons, 1861 - 74, 1871 - 89, 1881 - 76, 1931 - 51, 2001 - 50.
