Biographical Notes:

It is not possible to tell with 100% certainty whether Thomas was the son of William KEYNES & Sarah HELLIER his wife, christened at Hilton on 3rd July 1652, or the son of John KEYNES & Mary PARSONS his wife, christened at Hilton on 24th January 1653/4. Both couples appear to have remained at Hilton: Mary KAYNES (née PARSONS) was buried at Hilton on 26th February 1693/4; John KAYNES was buried at Hilton on 21st July 1699 and Sarah KEYNNES (née HELLIER) was buried at Hilton on 9th December 1712.

Thomas married Ann SUMMERS at Dorchester All Saints on 3rd June 1682. Four of Thomas & Ann’s children were christened at Hilton: Sarah KAINE 10th October 1682; Mary KAINS 21st May 1685; Joseph KAINS 27th June 1687 and Thomas KAYNES 22nd June 1689. We know from Thomas’ own will and that of his brother-in-law, George Summers, a glazier of Cerne Abbas (PCC ref.: 11/485 written 28th January 1701/2 and proved 16th November 1705) that Thomas & Ann had at least two other children, Elizabeth and John. Perhaps these last two were christened at neighbouring Melcombe Horsey, whose registers for this period have been lost. (Since son Joseph was mentioned in neither will, he is probably the Joseph KAYNES buried at Hilton on 27th July 1690.) Ann predeceased Thomas and was buried at Hilton on 13th April 1710. Thomas himself was buried at Hilton on 9th November 1731.
