Feb 8 – Attendance small in consequence of severe weather - ?21/26 present.

Feb 11 – Alice LANE, Mary BROWN and Annie TITE sick.

Feb 15 – Excused Elizth BROWN. Bessie and George BUCKLAND sick. George BROWN absent with bad foot.

Feb 22 – Attendance very small, children ill with bad throats.

Jan 14 – End of the 4^th Quarter.

Jan 31 – Alice LANE, James GOULD and Harry KINGMAN sick in the I Class. James MILES returned to school. Ellen BROWN excused.

Feb 7 – Alban ROBERTS back to school, after being away from home for some weeks. George BUGG recovered from sickness.

Feb 14 – Good full school. Ordinary work. John ROBERTS returned to school after a long illness.

Feb 17 – The school was inspected and the scholars examined.

Feb 21 – In consequence of a wet morning the attendance has been very much below the average. Mary BROWN left after successfully passing the III Standard Feb 17, 1876.

Mar 4 – ‘Summary of Inspector’s Report:

The school is in excellent order, and has passed a very creditable examination, except in arithmetic.

Sep 21 – Attendance rather below the average. Broke up for the Christmas holiday.

1877

Jan 1 – Commenced school with a small number present owing to bad weather. John TRIM sick. Excused Made FIFETT.

Jan 8 – John ROBERTS left off work and returned to school. Attendance still below the average in consequence of continued bad weather.

Jan 15 – Maurice FIFETT and Matilda ROBERTS left the school. Bessie and Georgina COOMBES sick.

Jan 22 – Mary LANE sick with measles. Arthur Penny absent without leave. Arthur and Frank COOMBES away from school with bad colds.

School closed on account of illness from January 29^th to February 12^th.

Feb 12 – Attendance still very low, children not recovered from measles.

Feb 19 – monitor able to return to her class. Bessie BUCKLAND very ill. Several children still suffering with measles.

Feb 26 – Attendance much improved. Hannah ROBERTS returned after being absent some weeks. Bessie BUCKLAND still sick.

Feb 28 – School inspected and children examined. Signed: ?S.H. GORDON, H.M. Inspector.

Mar 5 – Sam BROWN and James STOKES left school for work. Sam BROWN successfully passed the IV Standard. Charles TRIM excused. James GOULD and Albert BAKER absent without leave.

Mar 14 – Gave a holiday at the request of the Rev F.G. HENLEY. Annie GOULD and Fanny CROCKER sick. Excused George BROWN.

May 2 – Jane, Bessie and Edmund HOPKINS not allowed to remain on the school books, in consequence of breaking rules, and rude behaviour from parents.

Admitted Bessie FUDGE, and readmitted John TITE and Emily TITE. James GOULD absent with a bad foot. Annie GREEN excused for the week owing to home circumstances.

May 7 – Readmitted James STOKES. Rice Roberts left school for work. Successfully passed the IV Standard in February.

May 14 – Admitted Fred FUDGE, Bessie DAVIDGE and Bessie LANE. Average for the week 45, one wet day.

Nov 24 – Attendance very poor in consequence of the children suffering from Scarlet fever in the Parish.

Dec 3 – The school closed by the Medical authority, on account of continued fever amongst the children.

Jan 7 – Admitted John and Josiah COOMBES. Fred, Geo and Louisa BUGG absent from home circumstances. Annie GOULD sick.

Jan 14 – Mabel and Blanche FIFETT returned to school after being absent several weeks. Hannah ROBERTS sick.

Jan 28 – Attendance very small, owing to a wet morning.

Jan 29 – Tom and John TRIM returned recovered from sickness.

Feb 11 – School inspected and children examined. Signed: George H. GORDON, H.M. Inspector of Schools.

Feb 5 – Harriett BROWN recovered from sickness.

Feb 15 – Commenced drill. Gave an hour from 3 to 4 on Friday afternoon.

Mar 4 – Excused John TRIM and James STOKES for work. Hannah ROBERTS sick.

Mar 16 – Summary of Inspector’s report:

The instruction of the school is on the whole fairly good. The Arithmetic is still the weak point, but the Reading and Spelling are certainly better. To merit a grant another year the special subjects must improve, though I think for this year they will ‘pass muster’. More desks should be provided with as little delay as possible.

Feb 17 – Fred FUDGE sick and excused from the Infant Class. Wm MATTHEWS and Grace TRIM still sick.

Feb 24 – Admitted Jane HOPKINS to the 4^th Class. John COOMBES sick.

Mar 3 – George BROWN left school.

Standard work has improved since last year, though the children are still slow in replying to questions. Geography is poor as a whole – Grammar very fair, and Sewing good – Discipline is all that could be wished – Domestic Economy is very creditably done.

Report for the year ending April 30^th 1883:

The condition of the school may be considered very satisfactory in view of the exceptional difficulties in the way of regular attendance. With the material at command the Teacher is entitled to every praise, in that she succeeds so well. A good proportion of passes has been secured in the Elementary subjects, though there were some failures in Arithmetic due to imperfect notation. The girls do their Needlework well, and a fair degree of proficiency has been obtained in both Grammar and Geography. Some few have also passed with credit in Domestic Economy. And the Infant Class, small as it is, is improving.

The children have acquitted themselves with credit in the elementary subjects except in the fourth and fifth standards, in the former of which the spelling is bad, whilst the Arithmetic is weak in both. The English has been fairly done, and Needlework is good, but Geography is poor, and the discipline very lax especially in the first class. Domestic Economy has been taken, but with meagre success, and the school will probably do better if fewer subjects are attempted.

The order is good, and the children read well, but their writing and arithmetic are weak, and it seems questionable, whether with the difficulties of attendance it is expedient to attempt quite so much in the way of class subjects. The Infants are only in fair order. Needlework is good.

Summary of Inspector’s report June 1888

There has been a great amount of sickness during the last five months among the children of this school. Under the circumstances the elementary results are very fairly creditable, but Arithmetic must improve another year. English and Geography are fair. Needlework is good.

Sep 4 – I (S.J. THOMAS) commenced duties as Mistress at this school. There were 40 children present both morning and afternoon. School visited in the morning by the Rev S.F. HOOPER and in the afternoon by Mrs HOOPER.

Sep 6 – A very wet morning – only 11 children present. Sent Gwennie ROBERTS (the monitress) home. Visitor Rev S.F. HOOPER.

Sep 15 – I find the boys very unruly and disobedient. This afternoon I had occasion to punish William and Frank PARSONS. They succeeded in taking the cane out of my hand, and breaking it to pieces, accompanying the action with some low remarks. I felt myself justified in turning them out of the school, which I accordingly did.

Sep 18 – At the request of the Rev S.F. HOOPER William and Frank PARSONS have been allowed to return to the school.

Sep 29 – Addie LANE has been absent all the week through illness.

Oct 4 – Yesterday, while punishing Arthur TROWBRIDGE for shouting at me in a most insolent manner, I accidently caused his finger to bleed. This afternoon, as I was about to return to the school, his mother met me near my lodgings, and used most abusive language. As she seemed determined to accompany me to the school, and continue her abuse, I decided to turn back. The monitress, being unable to manage alone, the children did not assemble in the afternoon.

Oct 6 – School visited by the Attendance Officer.

Oct 13 – The boys being unruly this morning I had to send to the Rectory, to ask the Rev COBB if he would come to the school for a few minutes, which he kindly did.

Oct 19 – Attendance very bad this week. Only 27 children present this morning.

Oct 24 – George STOKES, Albert STOKES and Frank PARSONS all ran out of school this morning.

Oct 25 – Frank PARSONS ran out of school again this morning before the registers were marked. George STOKES refused to come in after play-time saying he had been told to go somewhere at 11 o’clock – his attendance cancelled.

Oct 26 – Frank PARSONS ran out of school this afternoon before the registers were marked; and William PARSONS soon after – his attendance cancelled.

Oct 27 – William and Frank PARSONS and Albert STOKES were allowed to go outside this morning and did not come into school again – their attendance cancelled.

Oct 1899 – Copy of Diocesan Inspector’s Report:

‘The school has passed a satisfactory examination on the whole. The best results were obtained in the Infant Department, where the answering was bright and the repetition accurate. The teachers appear to have made every effort to interest the children in their work.

Remarks: The middle division is rather weak – especially in explanation of the Catechism. It would be advisable that the Upper Division should learn some scripture by heart.’

Nov 3 – Admitted two new scholars this week – Reginald and Isabella HAIN.

Nov 8 – William and Frank PARSONS ran out of school again this morning. Arthur LANE did not come in after play-time. The attendances of all three were cancelled.

Apr 30 – An unknown gentleman has presented the school with several packets of seeds from Sutton and Co: of Reading and also with a handsome microscope and magnifying glass.

H.M.I. report for the year ending April 30^th 1901 [1900?]:

May 2 – I divided the children into two Classes according to their attainments.

May 12 – The Rector and Mrs HOOPER visited.

May 18 – Took the children through the fields and down to the river on Wednesday for ‘A Spring Walk’ which was the Object Lesson for that afternoon.

May 21 – The managers gave a half holiday to Commemorate the ‘Relief of Mafeking’.

Jun 22 – Attendance very poor on Thursday and Friday owing to the wet weather – only 21 being present on Thursday morning.

Jun 29 – Admitted three Infants this week viz: Albert FRIZZLE, Frank PAINTER, Rose ELSWORTH. School dismissed on Friday Afternoon for the Summer Holidays as the boys were in great request by the Farmers in the Locality to help with the Hay-making.

Jul 30 – School re-opened after four weeks holiday. According to the new Time Table school commences at 1:30pm and closes at 3:55pm.

Aug 3 – The Rector took the school in Scripture on Wednesday morning.

Aug 16 – School closed as the children over 7 were taken to Bournemouth through the kindness of the Rector and Major DUGDALE.

Aug 24 – Attendance much better. Edward TROWBRIDGE aged 5 away with the measles, which necessitates the absence of his brother and sister. Mrs HOOPER visited.

Aug 31- Half holiday on Tuesday afternoon as the children were given a tea at King Stagg at the General fete in which the children belonging to Pulham – King Stagg – Holwell and lydlich participated. The Rector took the school in Scripture on Wednesday morning.

Oct 7 – School routine as usual. A few boys away picking up potatoes.

Oct 12 – The ELSWORTHs – six in number – have left the village.

Nov 9 – Poor attendance as many of the children away acorn picking. The rector attended on Wednesday morning. Mrs HOOPER visited with two ladies.

Jan 18 – School routine as usual. Visitors Mrs HOOPER and Miss F. CROSS. Very wet and boisterous weather prevented a good attendance.

Feb 1 – Admitted Nellie NEWPORT on Tuesday.

Mar 1 – Admitted Josephine TITE age 6 years.

Mar 8 – Many of the children have bad colds and coughs and are unable to attend school.

Mar 15 – The bad colds are still prevalent. This week the managers very kindly provided the school with a piano.

Mar 8 – Mr ROSE the Attendance Officer called this Friday afternoon.

Mar 22 – School closed on Wednesday afternoon by orders of the Rector owing to the inclemency of the weather.

Mar 29 – Poor attendance owing to bad weather and so many of the children being ill. It was distressing to hear the children coughing in school.

Apr 19 – Admitted Maude BROWN, May BROWN and Winifred CLUETT. Elsie and Edward TROWBRIDGE have left and gone to Pulham to live. All the children who have been so ill returned to school this week.

May 10 – Half holiday on Tuesday afternoon as the Yeomanry were having a sham fight on Lydlinch Common. 12 children present on Wednesday morning as the weather was bitterly cold and wet. School closed in the afternoon on account of the weather.

Sep 2 – Willie BURT returned to school after being away two weeks with the measles.

Sep 12 – Reggie LANE away with measles. On Tuesday morning at 12 o’clock The Bishop of Southwark who is Lord of the Manor planted an Oak Tree on the Common close to the school to commemorate the Coronation of King Edward 7^th which took place on August 9^th 1902. Before doing so his Lordship gave a short and interesting address to the children. There were present – The Lady Barbara YEATMAN-BIGG, Miss Margaret YEATMAN-BIGG, The Rev S.F. HOOPER and Mrs HOOPER, Miss SHEPHERD and Miss GARDNER. After the Address the children marched to the Common where the Ceremony took place. They then sang ‘Three Cheers for the Red, White and Blue’, God Save the King’, ‘Here’s a Health unto his Majesty’.

On Wednesday a Dinner was given by the Bishop for all the adults of Lydlinch whilst the Rector gave the children a tea. The school was closed on this day.

Oct 17 – Admitted the following children – John and Tom LANGDON, Lizzie, Ethel Ruth and Ernest BROWN from Blandford. School visited by Mrs DUGDALE and Mrs HOOPER. The Rector gave his usual lesson on Wednesday morning.

Oct 27 – Began fires. Admitted May SANSOME.

Nov 10 – Miss Edith CROSS visited on Friday morning.

Nov 28 – School closed all day as the Children gave a Concert in the evening.

Dec 5 – The Concert given by the children last week was a great success. The Admission Price was Sixpence. £1:19:0 was taken in money. Out of this £1:15:0 was paid for the Platform which is for general use in the Village and 3/6 for the iron bar to hold the curtains.

Dec 9 – The Grant Aid amounts to £13, £12 for maintaining present Salaries, £1 towards painting and whitewashing.

The following children came in too late to be marked. This happened during the visit of H.M.I. T. BUTT Esq. The cause of their being late was sliding on the ice.

Feb 7 – School closed on Thursday as Miss Edith CROSS a sister of one of the Managers (Mr A. CROSS) was married to the Curate of Lydlinch the Rev Sydney KENT and the Wedding Breakfast was held in the Schoolroom.

Feb 7 – Heard of the sudden death of a brother. The Managers very kindly allowed me to close the school for a week.

Feb 17 – Re-opened school with only 15 present.

Mar 13 – As both Scholars and Mistress were suffering from Influenza the Managers decided to close the school on Tuesday evening. Average 16.1.

Apr 28 – School reopened with an attendance of 16. A heavy downfall of rain caused this small attendance. Willie BURT left to attend the Wesleyan School in Sturminster.

May 8 – No registers marked on Tuesday the 5^th, as a heavy downpour of rain caused only 13 scholars to be present. Number on the books 23. Average 22.4.

May 22 – Empire Day. The Rector and Mrs HOOPER attended at 11 ?am. The former addressed the children on matters connected with the Empire, after which, the children sang ‘God Save the King’ and ‘Flag of Britain’ in which the Flag was duly saluted. The afternoon was a half-holiday.

Jul 3 – Took the elder scholars this afternoon at 3:30 to see the mechanism of the restored five bells in the church tower. Mr BARBER explained how the bells were rung, and a pleasant and instructive half hour was spent.

Dec 2 – School visited on Thursday morning by H.M.I. T. BUTT. Report:

Much of the work of this small school is creditable. Reading, Handwriting, Spelling, and Written Composition have improved but Arithmetic still needs much attention. The lessons in geography and history are made interesting and due attention is given to local knowledge. Great pains have been taken to make Nature Study practical and the Boys take a keen interest in the School flower garden. The Infants’ Class is making very fair progress, except in the Elements of Number and Drawing. The instruction in these subjects should be simplified, and only such examples as are within the children’s grasp should be attempted.

Dec 21 – Each of the 25 children was presented with a pair of strong boots by the Rector, the Revd S.F. HOOPER.

Jun 10 – Owing to the heavy rains and the good condition of the soil, extra gardening, such as cutting the banks, weeding, transplanting seedlings and adding fresh soil, has been done this week intermittently between the ordinary lessons. This finishes the gardening for the summer.

In spite of the youthfulness of many of the scholars, and a curtailed period of preparation, the children have acquitted themselves most creditably. There is an abundance of promise of excellent results in the coming year. The teaching is most careful and conscientiously imparted. The tone and discipline are excellent.

Mar 13 – H.M.I. Dr H.W. IRVINE paid his first visit to this school and remained from 9.40 a.m. to 12.20.

Mar 20 – The Rector gave his usual lesson in Scripture on Wednesday morning. Half Holiday Friday afternoon as the Medals and Prizes were given to the children in the evening by Miss Alice HOOPER.

Mar 27 – Mrs GADERDEN of Holwell Manor visited at 2.30 Friday afternoon and accompanied the children in their Concert Songs. She expressed herself as being greatly pleased at their improvement. Mrs GADERDEN will play for them at Sherborne. Miss WHERRY the Lady Dentist examined the children’s teeth this morning.

Apr 6 – Took 22 children to Sherborne in the morning as they had entered for ‘The Singing Contest’ and were successful in winning the Silver Rose Bowl with 121 marks. The registers were marked, this being allowed.

Apr 9 – Miss A.E. WHERRY the Lady Dentist visited the school for the first time and examined the teeth of each child. This seems to contradict the entry for Mar 27.

Apr 20 – School reopened [after the Easter break] with 32 present.

May 1 – School Report written by H.M.I. Dr H.W. IRVINE:

The Infants are taught in a room by themselves, but are not in the charge of a teacher possessing a qualification under the Code; they appear, however, to have made capital progress in all essentials.

There is a pleasant atmosphere of life and movement about this little school as a whole. The mistress is devoted to her work, and succeeds in arousing the activities of the children to a marked degree.

The older children speak well, read with fair fluency, and with intelligence and natural emphasis.

They write fairly neatly, and express themselves in writing with fairly good success.

They have no dictionaries, and it is hoped that this want may soon be supplied.

Drawing is fairly done, but some quite good brush work has been accomplished; too much of the scale drawing has been copied from cards, and this practice should be discontinued. Nature Observation has received much attention, and good notes have been made by the children. Arithmetic is on sensible lines; more care should be exercised in written Arithmetic to make the processes clear by means of accurate statement; the children have fair ability in mental calculation.

A great deal of Needlework is done, and the aesthetic side of this subject id developed by the girls being allowed to ornament the garments they make with embroidery made by them selves; at the same time the practical side is not neglected, and the girls are really capable workers.

The playground is mostly grassed, and is soppy in wet weather: it would be advantageous if some additional impervious surface could be provided.

May 19 – H.M. Assistant Inspector Mr WALSH paid his first visit to this school this afternoon arriving at 1.35 and leaving at 3.45. He examined the children in Reading – History – Geography and Composition. He also heard them sing.

May 20 – Holy Thursday. Took the children to church. Holiday in the afternoon.

May 25 – Empire Day – Gave the children an address on the Empire for one of the morning lessons and the school was dismissed for the usual half a days holiday.

May 28 – Mrs HOOPER brought Mrs J. HOOPER to hear the children sing.

A heavy downfall of rain in the night was taken advantage of by the whole of the elder scholars on Thursday morning by the weeding, transplanting, lawn-mowing, hedge-cutting and a general tidying up of the school flower garden. Miss CROSS visited on Friday afternoon.

Sep 15 – Seven girls attend the Cookery Class at Sturminster Newton Church of England Girls’ School every Tuesday under the supervision of Miss HOLBERTON.

Mar 15 – 13 children present, but the coughing was so incessant that school routine greatly hampered. The Rector therefore telegraphed to the Head Quarters in London that the school would be closed until Wednesday morning.

Mar 19 – Several children away all the week. Mrs E.M. GADESDEN practised with the children the songs which they are going to sing at the coming Competition in Sherborne on Friday March 26^th.

Mar 26 – Hilda SHEPPARD, Ivy SHEPPARD and Dora JOHNSTON have left, having gone to Mere. School closed for 16 of the children to attend the Singing Competition in Sherborne. The Silver Rose Bowl was again won by 50 marks out of 80.

Apr 16 – Mr F. ATKINS called to see me on Tuesday morning to say that he was giving Edmund VALLENCE age 12 years in his employ four shillings per week. I have therefore marked off the boy’s name from the registers.

May 13 – Ascension Day. Took the children to church as usual. No registers marked. Holiday in the afternoon.

Jun 7 – Admitted Nellie KNOWLES and Winifred FRIZZLE both 5 years of age.

Jun 11 – The children spent this morning weeding, digging up the path, trimming banks and hedges, transplanting seedlings in the school garden.

Jun 16 – School closed all day ad the Mistress took 15 of the older children by Motor Bus to Dorchester where they were shown over through the courtesy of C. BONE Esqr the County Council Offices. The lodgings of Judge JEFFRY’s were visited, also the Museum, where objects of great interest were keenly observed by the children. Unfortunately, the time limit prevented the amphitheatre and Maumbury Rings being seen, but the barracks were amply stared at and greatly interested the lads.

Jun 25 – Heard that George FRIZZLE (one of three brothers who were educated by the present mistress and who had enlisted at the beginning of the war) had been killed in the trenches at Sedd-ul-Bahr in the Dardenelles on June 21, 1915.

Aug 9 – School reopened after five weeks holiday. Irene and Edith BROWN have left as they are leaving the neighbourhood.

Aug 13 – The school has been thoroughly done up during the holidays, the walls being coloured, the ceiling whitened and parts of the room painted where necessary. The outdoor offices have also been repaired and whitewashed.

Jun 30 – Mr A. ROSE [Attendance Officer] visited re the poor attendance of late in answer to my remarks referring to Ivy and Gilbert TUFFIN.

Jul 11 – This afternoon Mr J. COLES a Member of the Brantford (Canada) Board of Education visited and was much interested in the methods taught in the school which compared favourably with those of Brantford. He addressed the children and pointed out to them the great opportunities to be found for men and boys on the land in Canada.

Sep 14 – Mr ROSE visited and told Tom MOWLEM that he was to attend school regularly.

Sep 15 – Messrs GODFREY, Pianoforte Manufacturers of Yeovil, sent two of their men to overhaul the school piano as, at times, the notes would not sound. It took them from 9.40 to 2.45.

Oct 13 – The Revd M.J. RUSH – Missioner in connection with the National Mission of Repentance and Hope visited with the Rector and gave a short address to the children.

Jan 23 – Miss ?ROBSON the Welfare Nurse called to see Stella GOULD. WSF £1.

Jan 27 – Mrs STEWART the lady dentist inspected the children’s teeth in the morning.

Feb 7 – Bertie TUFFIN away all the week – ill. Ivy TUFFIN and Jack TUFFIN away part of the week, ill.

Feb 7 – WSF 14s 6d.

Feb 18 – Mrs STEWART visited and took out the teeth of six children.

Feb 19 – Registers not marked as owing to heavy snowstorm only 13 were present in the morning and 15 in the afternoon.

Feb 20 – 18 present out of 31 – 8 children away through illness.

Feb 21 – Donald CLUETT and Margery ANTELL absent through Influenza. They are attended by Dr HOLLICK.

Feb 18 – Admitted Winifred, Jack, Mabel and Albert TURK from Devizes.

Feb 26 – School closed this Wednesday morning by order of Dr HOLLICK owing to so many of the children being away suffering from Influenza. 16 out of 31 have been present.

Mar 11 – School reopened but the registers were not marked as only 17 children were present.

Mar 21 – 24 children attended on Monday and Tuesday out of 31 on the Registers. Eva ORCHARD away having scalded both her feet very badly. Only 17 were present on Wednesday and Thursday owing to the continuous heavy rain.

Mar 28 – 29 marked on Monday out of 31. Jack PERRETT, Eva ORCHARD away ill.

Apr 4 – Admitted Edna BOYER aged 6.

Apr 11 – Admitted Ida PERRETT.

Apr 28 – Dorothy BURT left having reached the age of 14 and having made perfect attendance for nine years and six months. Donald CLUETT away ill. Readmitted Charles CLUETT.

May 1 – Received 2 first class medals, two bars and three second class medals.

May 9 – Ivy TUFFIN away the whole week with a cold. Edna BOYER also absent having gone to Poole.

May 13 – Admitted Margaret MOGG aged 4.

May 16 – Donald CLUETT left having gone to live at Sparkford.

Jun 16 – Edna BOYER returned from Poole after an absence of six weeks.

Jun 26 – Mr A. ROSE the attendance officer visited.

Aug 28 – No registers marked in the morning owing to the unusually heavy rain. 14 were present out of 31.

Sep 2 – School closed for the day as the children were taken by Motor Bus to Weymouth to see the Atlantic War Fleet.

Sep 5 – Dora WHITE left having gone back to London.

Sep 8 – Admitted Janette and Phyllis ATKINS aged 6 and 4.

Sep 10 – School visited by the Rev G. BISCOE to observe the methods by which Scripture is taught.

Sep 26 – School closed at 4pm until October 6^th for the King’s Holiday to celebrate the Peace Terms.

Oct 6 – School reopened with 26 present out of 27 on the Registers.

Sep 24 – Miss Jessie FRIZZLE left after being a teacher for 17 years.

Oct 6 – Scripture Report:

‘I paid my first visit to this school today. For the purposes of religious instruction the school is divided into 2 groups, the Infants and Standard 1 forming the lower. Both groups have been carefully taught. The Repetition of Scripture and Catechism was accurately said. With the higher group a definite and successful attempt is made to interest the children in the actual reading of Scripture, the questioning by way of instruction and explanation being varied and productive of thought.

A very nice little school.

Nov 3 – Miss Agnes Miriam DAVIES commenced her duties as Supplementary Teacher for the Infant Class.

Nov 5 – E.A. FORSE absent Monday afternoon, Tuesday and Wednesday by the kind permission of the Managers on account of her attending a funeral in London. The registers were marked by the Assistant Miss A. DAVIES. As only 14 children were present on Tuesday morning: the Reg. Were not marked.

Dec 17 – Miss T. OSBORNE the Health Visitor came today.

Jan 5 – School reopened with 26 present, the total on the registers.

Jan 16 – Winifred CROCKER away the whole week with sore throat and earache. The War Savings Fund for the last 22 weeks average 19s 2d weekly, 17 members. Taught two girls how to use the sewing machine.

Jan 30 – Mr George CLUETT called to say that Charlie CLUETT could not attend for a while as he is suffering from an abcess [sic] in the head and is also [blank].

Feb 6 – Winnie CROCKER away by order of the Doctor. Frances MOGG and Ida PERRETT both absent through illness.

Feb 13 – Winifred CROCKER, Eva ORCHARD and Margaret MOGG absent through illness.

Feb 14 – Ton of coal brought.

Feb 16 – Sent Coal Account to the Rev S.F. HOOPER by Winifred FRIZZLE.

Feb 20 – Severe coughs and colds prevalent amongst the children. Ivy TUFFIN, Bertie TURK, Eva ORCHARD and Mary CLUETT absent through illness the whole week.

Feb 27 – Ivy TUFFIN, Bertie TURK, Eva ORCHARD, Bertie TUFFIN, Margaret MOGG, Bertha MATCHAM and Edith CROCKER absent all the week through severe colds.

Apr 12 – Owing to the heavy rain 19 children out of 30 were present. Admitted Norman MILES aged 5.

Apr 15 – Admitted Norman CHERRETT aged 5.

Apr 26 – Mr GRIDDLE the newly appointed Attendance Officer made his first visit.

May 26 – Gave the children special lessons on The Making of The Empire and how The Union Jack was composed of the Flags of St George, St Andrew and St Patrick. The National Anthem was sung.

May 21 – Winifred CROCKER absent owing to Chicken Pox.

Jun 1 – Miss Agnes M. DAVIES left. Dorothy BURT started her duties as Monitress having been appointed by the Managers and Committee. 8 children transferred from the Classroom into the big room to be taught Standard 1 work.

Jun 4 – The Percentages of Attendance averaging 96 entitles the children to a half holiday as allowed by the Dorchester Committee of Education. This Per: Cent: refers to the month of May.

Jun 11 – The First Class weeded and tidied the garden during the day.

Jul 9 – In spite of the exceptionally heavy rain during the week the Per: Cent: of attendances was 87.

Jul 16 – The Attendance Officer [visited?] this Friday morning and has paid weekly visits since his appointment; the results are good.

Gave the 3^rd Term Examination this morning. All present in the large room with the exception of Ivy TUFFIN who has now been absent for 6 weeks on account of her mother’s illness.

Jul 21 – Sent fifteen shillings to Sunshine House – the home of Blinded Babies – this sum of money was collected by the children in this school.

Jul 23 – School closed at 12pm for Four weeks Summer Holidays.
