Bishops Transcripts were copies of baptisms, marriages and burials, taken from the Parish Registers, and sent to the Bishop. There is always the possibility that they may have been copied incorrectly, and if possible entries should be checked from another source, ie parish registers, before the entries are used for research purposes. The Parish Registers for Preston and Sutton Poyntz are held at Dorchester Record Office.
Baptisms and burials date from 1693, and marriages from 1695. Earlier copies of the registers have not survived.
The Bishops Transcripts for Preston and Sutton Poyntz are held at Wiltshire & Swindon History Centre, and date from 1592 , though some years are missing and other pages are in a poor condition and difficult to read. Before Bishops Transcripts were sent to the Bishop they were signed and certified by the Vicar and Churchwardens to be a true record of the parish registers. The signatures can be seen in the original records, some of them more clearly than others. I have transcribed these names, as they occur, so that anyone recognising the name of an ancestor, can order a copy of the relevant page and see their signature.
