VESTRY BOOK 1857
At a Vestry meeting of the owners and rate payers of the Parish of Stratton meet at the Vestry Room in the said Parish on Thursday the 3rd day of December 1857 pursuant to notice duly given for the purpose of taking into consideration the propriety of selling the poor Houses of the said Parish.

It was resolved that the consideration of the matter be postponed until tomorrow and that this meeting do stand adjourned to the same place to the 4th of December instant at 12 Oclock at noon.

At a Vestry Meeting of the owners and rate payers of the Parish of Stratton held at the Vestry Room in the said Parish by adjournment on the 4th day of Dec 1857 for the purpose of taking into further consideration the propriety of selling the Poor Houses of the said Parish.

It was resolved by a majority of the owners and rate payers present at this Meeting.
That this meeting do consent to the Guardians of the poor of the Dorchester Union selling to Mrs Pattison the premises described in the margin hereof [Transcribers Note – Details Shown Below] at or for the sum of Fifty Five pounds sterling under the provisions of an act passed in the 6th Year of the reign of his late Majesty King William
the 4th initiated an act to facilitate the conveyance of Poor Houses and other Property of Parishes and of incorporations of Unions of Parishes in England and Wales in such manner and subject to such rules orders and regulations vouching such sale the conveyance of such Property and the application of the produce arising therefrom for the permanent advantage of this Parish as the Poor Law Board shall in that behalf direct.

A House now occupied as separate Tenements of Poor persons belonging to the Parish of Stratton, and a small piece of Land adjoining thereto.

At a Vestry meeting held this day according to notice duly convened for the purpose of considering and revising the Assessment Valuation List for this Parish.

Mark Green. Richard Davis. John Brown and David Brett.
It was considered this Parish was rated higher than other Parishes in the County, And resolved that application be made to the Union Assessment Committee to reduce the rate throughout the Parish, and that an Amended Valuation List should be made, or such other means adopted as the Assessment Committee might order or direct.

At a Vestry meeting held this day according to Notice duly convened for the purpose of nominating Overseers, Guardians & Waywardens for the coming year.

John Brown, Mark Green and Richd Davis
It was unanimously agreed and consented to that Mr Richard Davis and Mr John Willis be elected Overseers for the coming year.
It was also unanimously agreed that Mr Thos. Chick be duly elected Waywarden, and Guardian for the ensuing year.
In consequence of a Letter from the Highway Board calling on this Parish for the payment of the repairs of Bradford Bridge.
It was considered advisable that Mr Chick should consult with Mr Symonds as to the legality of this Parish being bound to keep the Bridge in repair, the same never having being repaired by Stratton Parish, also that Mr Chick shod. give orders for resisting the payment.

At a Vestry meeting held this day according to notice duly convened for the purpose of taking into consideration if any and what steps should be taken as to taking any objections to the proposed Basis or Standard for the County Rates.

It was considered that some steps be taken to make an objection to the Basis of the new County Rate it having been increased to £494 from the last basis, and being nearly £210 over and above the last new Assessment of the Poor Rate.
It was unanimously resolved that the Overseer be requested & do see Mr Symonds to request him to do what is necessary for making such obligation.

At a Vestry held this day according to notice and duly convened for the purpose nominating Overseers, Guardians, Waywardens for ensuing year.

It was unanimously agreed that Mr Robert Tilley and Mr William Pardey Junr be elected Overseers for the ensuing year.

At a Vestry meeting held this day according to notice duly convened for the purpose of taking into consideration the persons duly qualified for serving & nominating as Overseers Guardians & Waywardens for the coming year.

It was unanimously agreed that Mr Robert Tilley & Mr Wm Pardey Junr
Mr David Brett, Mr Geo. Short & Mr Geo. Allen be nominated as Overseers for the ensuing year.
It was also unanimously agreed that Mr Thomas Chick be duly elected Waywarden & Guardian for the ensuing year.
