Up Cerne

Up Cerne is a small hamlet and parish lying to the west of the River Cerne, a mile north of Cerne Abbas and about 9 miles north of Dorchester; the small church is of stone and flint and is of Norman design; the church seats just over 100 people and the registers date from the year 1650. Up Cerne Manor, built mostly using stone from the ruins of Cerne Abbey, was granted to Sir Walter Raleigh who sold it to Sir Robert Mellor in the 17th century. The interior of the house was largely destroyed in the 19th century, the manor was later held by the Whites and Battens. Up Cerne was the birthplace of Colonel John Mount Batten, noted British soldier and landowner.
