Transcribed from the original parish registers held at the Dorset History Centre in Dorchester and donated to the Dorset OPC Project by Kim Parker
Where one of the parties to the marriage is described as a “sojourner”, this means either that they were a temporary resident (as it was custom to marry in the bride’s parish) or that they were newly arrived in the parish and awaiting approval as a permanent parishioner recognised as being legally settled in the parish. Settlement status was important, as those who fell on hard times could only claim relief from their parish of legal settlement.
